Tragic Planet

Time to be frank about our predicament.

Global carbon emissions from electric power may peak this year.

That’s good news, but we need to put it in context.

-Even if CO2 emissions from electricity production peak in the next couple of years, it’s a long way from peaking to getting back down to zero, which is what we need. Given our population and economic growth, it’s unlikely that green electricity will be making a significant dent in current emissions any time soon.

-CO2 emissions from electricity are only about 40% of global emissions. We still need similar transport, agriculture, manufacturing, mining and construction advances.

-Speaking of manufacturing, these figures don’t consider the CO2 emissions that come from mining, manufacturing, transporting and installing all these new wind and solar installations nor the power grid upgrades needed to support them.

-As we produce more and more of these wind and solar systems, the increasing rarity and difficulty in mining and processing the minerals needed will cause the costs of materials to skyrocket, slowing down progress.

So, while this is good news, don’t assume that the problem is solved; we still have a big hill to climb.
