Tragic Planet

I am appalled by our Prime Minister’s behaviour on the environment. Clearly, he is driven purely by the money boom in his own Province of Alberta where the race to exploit the oil sands faster is causing billions of dollars to flow into the province. But oil sands processing is causing an environmental disaster of unprecedented proportions, destroying millions of acres of land, drying up rivers, and poisoning the aquifer while generating a huge proportion of Canada’s CO2. And most of the profits go to American oil companies.

In Bali, Canada is now siding with the USA in saying that the economy takes priority over the environment. This is so incredibly foolish. When making decisions between our life support system and the oil industry, they choose the oil industry. It is a well known fact that the nations of Europe and the companies and cities throughout the world who have done the most to cut their CO2 emissions have actually improved their economies and quality of life. The Bush and Harper line of thinking also ignores the fact that the economic cost of the environmental disasters to be spawned by unfettered CO2 emissions will be far greater than any sacrifice we must make now. The longer we wait, the bigger the environmental and economic damage, and the greater the human suffering.

Canada used to be a highly respected country around the world for its leadership on many fronts. Now we are increasingly despised and ridiculed, just like our American friends. These idiots must be removed from power fast before the damage they are inflicting on the planet becomes tragic, and there are increasing signs that the damage is happening faster than anyone thought it would.
