Who killed the DSCOVR project?

August 28, 2007

NASA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) cost over $100 million and was designed to measure the energy budget of our warming planet. Yet the spacecraft has remained in its box for the last five years and it looks like it is not going anywhere anytime soon. New DeSmogBlog contributor Mitchell Anderson will write a multi-part investigative report over the next few months. You can find the first article here.

Arctic Ice Coverage Will Shrink to 2050 Projections… This Summer

Sometimes you wish records didn’t get broken. A group of Japanese science agencies announced today that the area of the arctic sea covered by ice is at its lowest level ever recorded. It reached this low point on August 15th, and it’s going to get worse. Ice levels should continue to shrink all the way through mid-September. If reality matches predictions, the ice levels will reach IPCC predictions 40 years ahead of schedule. On...

Arctic sea ice shrinks to record low

August 17, 2007

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer WASHINGTON – There was less sea ice in the Arctic on Friday than ever before on record, and the melting is continuing, the National Snow and Ice Data Center reported. “Today is a historic day,” said Mark Serreze, a senior research scientist at the center. “This is the least sea ice we’ve ever seen in the satellite record and we have another month left to go in...

Canada’s provinces agree to push energy strategy

August 10, 2007

Looks like Canada’s provincial Premiers are a lot smarter than the Prime Minister! Stephen Harper is a Bush puppet and has adopted energy and environmental policies that are carbon copies of the USA’s, meaning they are disastrous, irresponsible and misleading. Good thing the Provinces are not following his lead. Now I’d like to see California-style incentives for renewable energy installations and grid-tie interconnectivity. CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – The premiers of Canada’s provinces and territories agreed on Thursday...

The Truth About Denial

August 6, 2007

This article by Sharon Begley in the August 13th edition of Newsweek provides a nice analysis and detailed timeline of the climate denial movement in the USA. It is long, but well worth reading. Here’s an extract: Since the late 1980s, this well-coordinated, well-funded campaign by contrarian scientists, free-market think tanks and industry has created a paralyzing fog of doubt around climate change. Through advertisements, op-eds, lobbying and media attention, greenhouse doubters (they hate being...

The Ethanol Scam

August 1, 2007

Here’s an excellent article from Rolling Stone Magazine on the ethanol boondoggle. This is nothing new, there are piles of information out there showing that ethanol from corn is a very bad idea. But ethanol makes Americans feel like they are doing something good without changing their comsumption habits, and nothing will stop farmers and energy companies for participating in this cash grab either.

US silently released their latest Climate Action Report last Friday

August 1, 2007

The US Governmnet used the old tactic of releasing an important report late on Friday, so it would get little to no press attention, and it worked. Looking at the report, it’s not surprising at all. It is proof positive of the Bush Administration’s total failure to curb greenhouse gas emissions, and it also describes the potential disaster that is likely to resul from that ineptitude. Another clear example of this Administration’s sneakiness. From...
